Spread over an area of 40,000 sq m (47,840 sq yd), on the slope corresponding to Els Planells piste
on the Vallnord piste map, Arinsal's FreeStyle Area
is a fairly respectable terrain park, designed and maintained by a dedicated team comprised of professional international riders.
The area boasts a halfpipe, boxes & rails (including mini rainbows), gap jumps, tables, hips, and a Skier/BoarderCross course; plus a chillout zone with some seating and a music system.
The halfpipe conforms to the official FIS (International Ski Federation) standard: 110 m (360 ft) long; 15–17 m (49–55 ft) wide; 4–5 m (13–16½ ft) high sidewalls.
The other modules are well set out to give a decent in-line slopestyle run; layout varies depending on snow cover, but is fairly consistent thanks to regular attention from the maintenance team.
This area is served by its own lift (unfortunately just a button tow, ‘Els Planells’) and Vallnord have a ‘Pipe Dragon’ piste-basher exclusively for the daily grooming of the halfpipe and the park.
The FreeStyle Area
hosts frequent events and competitions throughout the season, particularly at weekends, and is one of the star attractions of this sector. Use of the park is unrestricted, but beginners should stay well clear of the advanced features and stick to the training modules.
Food & refreshments are available nearby at the Xina Igloo bar/restaurant
, situated right next to the arrival point of Els Planells button tow.
